3.5 stars: I would have preferred giving EMBER a full four stars, because Ms. Callihan did an excellent job of piquing my interest and setting the dark, foreboding tone of her first Darkest London novel, I found several points in the story confusing. While its overall effect on the narrative was minimal, it was noticeable enough to warrant the half-star knock-down.
